Technical Service

Technical Services for EU type approval of passenger cars

Bosch Engineering's Technical Service is one of the independent Technical Services designated by the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt - KBA) under the umbrella of Bosch Engineering GmbH according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 and 17020 for vehicles, systems, components and individual technical units.

On its behalf, we carry out the necessary measurements for EU type approval in the following fields of testing from the drive system division: emissions and OBD, fuel consumption, engine power and exhaust emission opacity for diesel vehicles - either at our own state-of-the-art test facilities or at your location.

We accompany you throughout the entire certification process: beginning with the initial assessment by the KBA, to carrying out all relevant measurements as well as production of the test report, to picking up the certificate from the authority. As part of our self-imposed compliance requirements, we do not perform measurements on products from the Bosch Group but only provide our laboratory facilities to customers for this. In addition, at our customers' request we carry out the legally required inspections for the Conformity of Production (CoP) measurements according to series production within the tendering model by the KBA.

Our individual services are:

Conducting measurements for engine power certification (R85)

When conducting measurements for power certification, the motor is inspected from the minimum speed to the maximum speed, according to the manufacturer's specifications. The manufacturer's advised rated capacity as well as the working point with the largest torque is approached. This measurement is required for type approval according to reg. (EC) 715/2007 (UN/ECE-R85) and comprises:

  • Measuring the engine power of combustion motors to power motor vehicles
  • Measuring the effective power and the highest "30 minute performance" of electrical drive systems
  • Determination of the motor's power curve on the dynamometer

Conducting measurements for emission and OBD certification (R83)

We measure the pollutant emissions from the engine and check the vehicle's on-board diagnostics (OBD) system. This measurement is required for type approval according to reg. (EC) 715/2007 (UN/ECE-R83).

Emission measurement:

  • Type I: Emissions after a cold start (20°C)
  • Type II: CO emissions in idle mode
  • Type III: Emissions from the crankcase
  • Type IV: Evaporative emissions
  • Type V: Durability
  • Type VI: Emissions at low temperatures (-7°C) after a cold start
  • Emissions data definition for in-use tests
  • Real Driving Emissions (RDE) with a Portable Emission Measurement System (PEMS)

OBD inspection:

  • In order to individually test the diagnostic capability, the vehicle is fitted with different systems and components with errors.
  • The test has been passed when the diagnoses to be tested according to the tests recognize all errors before the end of the test cycle, display them, and the emissions are below the legally defined limit.

Conducting measurements for CO2 and fuel consumption certification (R101)

Here the CO2 and fuel consumption and/or electricity consumption are measured, as well as the electric range of passenger cars, which are driven by a pure combustion motor, a pure electric motor or with hybrid technology. The test on your vehicle is carried out on the dynamometer and is necessary for the type approval according to the reg. (EC) 715/2007 (UN/ECE-R101).

Conducting measurements for diesel smoke certification (R24)

We test your vehicle for approval of engines with self-ignition (diesel engines) regarding the emissions for visible, air-polluting substances, direct on the dynamometer. This measurement is required for type approval according to reg. (EC) 715/2007 (UN/ECE-R24).
