ESC-Elktest

ESC-Elktest

The cause – an accident and its consequences.
Summer 1997: A Swedish journalist rolls a vehicle while performing an avoidance maneuver, the Elk test.
The same maneuver is performed with no complicacy with the Electronic Stability Control ESC. The manufacturer of the specific vehicle therefore introduces ESC as standard equipment on that model. This event had the effect of generally increasing the implementation of ESC amongst Original Equipment Manufacturers, also known as OEMs. In this manner, the Elk test became an important milestone in the successful history of ESC.
Today ESC is a significant component of the safety equipment of all types of vehicles. It has also gained even more significance: The Euro NCAP classification (European New Car Assessment Program) only gives 5 star safety ratings if a vehicle is equipped with ESC as a standard option.

According to the Elk test the VDA (German Automobile Industry Alliance) defines the so called VDA-Lane Change which has been included in the ISO 3888-2 Norm and is therefore acknowledged as an international test procedure.
