“It could fit….” The search for an appropriate parking spot can be a challenge in more situations than just dense city traffic. When a spot is located, there can be a lot of time wasted before it is comprehended that it is not large enough for the vehicle to park.

Active parking aids and self park systems support the driver by both locating an appropriate spot and also during parking itself. With the aid of ultrasound sensors that monitor the vehicle’s surroundings, it is possible to precisely guide a vehicle into a parking space and avoid any possible contact with other objects:

• With the parking aid function, the driver is warned of reduced distance to obstacles by an audible signal. The distance can also be graphically displayed.
• Park-assistant measures possible parking spots along the side of the road when the vehicle drives by. It also uses the audible signal to inform the driver of an appropriate parking spot. After further acknowledgement by the driver, it can also take over the steering for the actual parking maneuver itself.

Parking Aid and Park Assistant result in an almost perfect parking maneuver and can also therefore avoid unwanted fender benders, particularly with less maneuverable vehicles. In any case, park-assist is a helpful device for locating a parking space and parking itself.

There are also further capabilities available with the Parkpilot sensors. With Side-View-Assist (SVA), the monitoring of the vehicle blind spots is possible. Before a lane change, the driver is warned of vehicles in the blind spot.
