ABS – Antilock Brake System
Control during braking: Available for more than just road vehicles.
1978: The first mass production ABS system for automobiles is introduced by Bosch. Today: Nearly all new vehicles are equipped with ABS, particularly as a function of ESC.
With ESC technology, a steering angle sensor, wheel speed sensors, a pressure sensor as well as a yaw rate sensor are combined to measure driver request and control vehicle dynamic behavior. By implementing ABS interventions during a panic brake maneuver, locking of wheels is avoided irrespective of the surface coefficient (dry/wet asphalt, snow, ice). By implementing ESC interventions during such a stop, vehicle stability is also guaranteed. During such a maneuver, the driver simply perceives his vehicle as being controllable and stable.
Bosch ABS is however not only implemented in cars and trucks. Agricultural machinery is now also benefiting from this technology. On such special vehicles, i.e. tractors, the brake force modulation at each wheel is done in conjunction with the separate brake pressure supply system of the vehicle.
